Oval Office Carpet Contains a Misquote

Do, 2010-09-02 06:13

The Oval Office recently got a major makeover. One of the features was the newly installed carpet had five quotes 'of meaning' to Obama. The problem is that one of the quotes is improperly attributed. The administration should have known about it not just from the extensive research that should have gone on before committing to them, but because Obama had misattributed the quote before and were told about the problem then.

"The new rug also has a new feature, promoted by the White House to the media, of inspirational quotes on its circumference from great Americans like Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. At least we hope they are, because the President still hasn’t figured out the correct origin of one of the quotes included in that carpet:

The quotes — described as being “of meaning” to and selected by President Obama — are:

“The Only Thing We Have to Fear is Fear Itself” – President Franklin D. Roosevelt

“The Arc of the Moral Universe is Long, But it Bends Towards Justice” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

“Government of the People, By the People, For the People” – President Abraham Lincoln

“No Problem of Human Destiny is Beyond Human Beings” – President John F. Kennedy

“The Welfare of Each of Us is Dependent Fundamentally Upon the Welfare of All of Us” – President Theodore Roosevelt

Martin Luther King did say what the White House attributes to him, but it wasn’t original to King, and King never claimed it was.  King quoted 19th-century Unitarian minister Theodore Parker, who wrote it in 1853.  As I noted in June 2009, Reverend Matt Tittle tried to inform the Obama campaign in April 2008 that they had misattributed the quote, but they never acknowledged his queries.

It’s one thing to misattribute a quote in a speech, and a little worse to ignore people who attempt to correct the mistake.  It’s another thing entirely to have the misattribution written into the carpet of the Oval Office, and to have the White House continue to issue misinformation and shortchange the original author of the phrase."

Priority Inbox For Gmail

Do, 2010-09-02 05:53

Gmail is trying to ease your email experience by taking filtering one step further. No longer will it just screen out junk mail, but it will now pull out the important messages so you can get to them first. If it works it will be a great feature. It will also mean and show just how much Google knows about you; even if only in an automated sense.

Video embedded below. (and)

"Gmail has always been pretty good at filtering junk mail into the “spam” folder. But today, in addition to spam, people get a lot of mail that isn't outright junk but isn't very important—bologna, or “bacn.” So we've evolved Gmail's filter to address this problem and extended it to not only classify outright spam, but also to help users separate this "bologna" from the important stuff. In a way, Priority Inbox is like your personal assistant, helping you focus on the messages that matter without requiring you to set up complex rules.

Priority Inbox splits your inbox into three sections: “Important and unread,” “Starred” and “Everything else”:

As messages come in, Gmail automatically flags some of them as important. Gmail uses a variety of signals to predict which messages are important, including the people you email most (if you email Bob a lot, a message from Bob is probably important) and which messages you open and reply to (these are likely more important than the ones you skip over). And as you use Gmail, it will get better at categorizing messages for you. You can help it get better by clicking the or buttons at the top of the inbox to correctly mark a conversation as important or not important. (You can even set up filters to always mark certain things important or unimportant, or rearrange and customize the three inbox sections.)"

Deep-Fried Beer

Do, 2010-09-02 05:14

I am at the same time a little creeped out and curious enough to try one.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink/foodanddrinknews/7973944/Deep-fried-beer-invented-in-Texas.html

"The beer is placed inside a pocket of salty, pretzel-like dough and then dunked in oil at 375 degrees for about 20 seconds, a short enough time for the confection to remain alcoholic.

When diners take a bite the hot beer mixes with the dough in what is claimed to be a delicious taste sensation.

Inventor Mark Zable said it had taken him three years to come up with the cooking method and a patent for the process is pending. He declined to say whether any special ingredients were involved.

His deep-fried beer will be officially unveiled in a fried food competition at the Texas state fair later this month."

Health And Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius - "We Have a Lot of Reeducation to do"

Mi, 2010-09-01 06:02

"Reeducation"; Democracies do not 'reeducate' or 'indoctrinate'. When the people know and are afraid of what is actually true as has been repeatedly proven true, trying to convince them of the opposite is can also more simply be described as a lie; the the former two have much more sinister undertones. Here you have a prominent supporter describing what they are going to do in totalitarian terms.

http://blogs.abcnews.com/thenote/2010/08/sebelius-time-for-reeducation-on-obama-health-care-law.html

"With a number of polls showing a sustained level of opposition to the Democrats’ health care reform efforts more than five months after passage, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said the Obama administration has “a lot of reeducation to do” heading into the midterms.
...
With several vulnerable House Democrats touting their votes against the bill, and Republicans running on repeal, Sebelius said “misinformation given on a 24/7 basis” has led to the enduring opposition nearly six months after the lengthy debate ended in Congress.

“So, we have a lot of reeducation to do,” Sebelius said."

Obama's Top Education Official Urged Government Employees to Attend a Sharpton's Counter Rally to Beck's Restoring Honor Rally

Mi, 2010-09-01 05:48

Beyond being wholly inappropriate it puts the lopsided attendance (3k for Sharpton, Hundreds of Thousands for Beck) in more context. Speaking of the massive crowd at Beck's rally, see the photo's compiled by Beck and his people at http://www.glennbeck.com/content/articles/article/198/44980.

http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/local/Education-secretary-urged-his-employees-to-go-to-Sharpton_s-rally-651280-101839293.html

"President Obama's top education official urged government employees to attend a rally that the Rev. Al Sharpton organized to counter a larger conservative event on the Mall.

"ED staff are invited to join Secretary Arne Duncan, the Reverend Al Sharpton, and other leaders on Saturday, Aug. 28, for the 'Reclaim the Dream' rally and march," began an internal e-mail sent to more than 4,000 employees of the Department of Education on Wednesday.
...
Although the e-mail does not violate the Hatch Act, which forbids federal employees from participating in political campaigns, Education Department workers should feel uneasy, said David Boaz, executive vice president of the libertarian Cato Institute.

"It sends a signal that activity on behalf of one side of a political debate is expected within a department. It's highly inappropriate ... even in the absence of a direct threat," Boaz said. "If we think of a Bush cabinet official sending an e-mail to civil servants asking them to attend a Glenn Beck rally, there would be a lot of outrage over that.""

One in Six Americans Now Enrolled in Government Anti-Poverty Programs

Mi, 2010-09-01 05:13

Over 50 million Americans are now enrolled in government anti-poverty programs. That is a record high and shows how bad our economy is doing.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2010-08-30-1Asafetynet30_ST_N.htm

"Government anti-poverty programs that have grown to meet the needs of recession victims now serve a record one in six Americans and are continuing to expand.

More than 50 million Americans are on Medicaid, the federal-state program aimed principally at the poor, a survey of state data by USA TODAY shows. That's up at least 17% since the recession began in December 2007."

Wine-Sipping Cattle

Mi, 2010-09-01 05:08

A good steak and a nice glass of wine sound like a good meal to a lot of people. Now you can have them 'blended' together with cattle who have wine in their feed.

http://www.cbc.ca/consumer/story/2010/08/27/con-wino-cows.html

"Angus cattle in British Columbia's Okanagan region are being fed red wine with their grain, and chefs say it makes the beef taste unique.

The idea is the brainchild of Janice Ravndahl of Kelowna's Sezmu Meats. Ravndahl said the beef produced in the wine and cattle areas of the region has an enhanced flavour, the marbling is finer and the fat tastes like candy."

Obama Discovers New Reason Politicians Should Avoid Umbrellas

Di, 2010-08-31 02:22

For more then half a century, politicians have tried to avoid being filmed or photographed with an umbrella. The reason was to avoid comparisons with 'peace in our time' Neville Chamberlain. Come to think of it though; if not for the public disdain for appeasement Obama might not mind the sort of appeasements-ish 'negotiate until we are blue in the face and you have already done what ever it was you wanted to do in the first place that we did not want you to do' comparison. Well, he would probably disagree with my imputed likely outcome of his negotiating style; but we will see visa-vi Iran soon enough. Does anyone think we are going to convince Iran to drop their nuke program. I digress.

The reason, shown in a photo, comes to you through Drudge by way of Instapundit to Althouse; which also just screams 'what if Bush did it'.

In that same post Althouse includes the less then confidence inspiring juxtaposition of Obama and Putin, and shows that while Obama did not pull it off it is possible to look cool with a bike.

Ohio Lawyer Suspended For Billing More Than 24 Hours in a Day on Three Different Occasions

Mo, 2010-08-30 23:51

Billing for more hours then there are in a day is a pretty big give away that you have been over billing. This lawyer did it three times.

http://www.abajournal.com/weekly/article/ohio_lawyer_suspended_for_billing_more_than_24_hours_a_day

"An Ohio lawyer has been suspended for overbilling local courts for her representation of poor clients, submitting bills for more than 24 hours a day on three different occasions.

The lawyer, Kristin Ann Stahlbush of Toledo, will be suspended for two years, with the second year stayed if she completes a one-year probationary period, the Legal Profession Blog reports.

According to an Ohio Supreme Court opinion (PDF) issued Tuesday, Stahlbush billed the courts in Lucas County for more than 24 hours a day on at least three different days, and more than 20 hours a day on five other occasions."
